Boost for young performing artists in Auckland and Waikato regions

DMMF Arts Excellence Award recipient 2018 Sally Kim

Talented young singers, dancers and musicians with a connection to Auckland or the Waikato are being offered a financial boost thanks to the Dame Malvina Major Foundation.

Applications are now open for Dame Malvina Major Foundation Auckland & Waikato Arts Excellence Awards, with up to $5,000 available for young performing artists with outstanding ability and real development potential.

The Auckland and Waikato Committee of the Dame Malvina Major Foundation will select this year’s recipient or recipients through an assessment and audition process in early May. Previous recipients have included singers Sophie Sparrow, Clare Hood, Madison Nonoa and Emily Scott, cellist Sally Kim, flautist Eva Ding, pianists Delvan Lin and Eddie Gifney, and violinists Shauno Isomura and Maia-Dean Martin.

The Dame Malvina Major Foundation assists young New Zealanders in the performing arts to achieve their potential by providing a range of grants, prizes and scholarships to enable education and training opportunities.

Dame Malvina Major said the Arts Excellence Awards were just one of the ways the Foundation supported young artists at a grass roots level.

“The focus of our regional committees is on fostering local talent and supporting the development of young emerging artists in their communities. Alongside financial support, this can include offering professional guidance and organising events where young talented artists have the opportunity to perform.

“The Foundation is very proud to be able to support promising young artists and to help grow the next generation of talent.”

Applications are now being accepted for the Dame Malvina Major Foundation Auckland & Waikato Arts Excellence Awards until Friday 26 April. Applicants will be required to perform for a panel of adjudicators at the Diocesan School for Girls in Epsom on Saturday 4 May.
