Christchurch pianist wins DMMF Arts Excellence Award

DMMF Christchurch Arts Excellence Award 2021 recipient Siyu Sun and DMMF Cecily Maccoll Award 2021 recipient Rose Light

The Christchurch committee of the Dame Malvina Major Foundation is pleased to announce the winner of the $5,000 DMMF Christchurch Arts Excellence Award 2021 is pianist Siyu Sun.

Now in its 19th  year of these awards, the panel were again delighted at the calibre of the artists’ applications, especially in these challenging times.

Siyu says she is absolutely delighted and honoured to be the recipient of the DMMF Christchurch Art Excellence Award. “I am hugely grateful for this support, which will be a big help towards my tuition for an Artist Diploma at Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London this year.”

The 2021 DMMF Cecily Maccoll High Achiever Award, worth $1,000, has gone to 16 year-old violinist Rose Light. The committee has awarded Rose a further discretionary award of $2,000 to assist with violin costs including masterclasses, National String Competition, accompanist sessions, National Youth Orchestra and Adam Summer School.

Rose says she is incredibly grateful for the support from the Foundation. “The scholarship will make all the difference for me to be able to continue with my passion for violin.”
