Joel Amosa named as DMM Young Artist with NZ Opera

Dame Malvina Major Young Artist with New Zealand Opera 2019 Joel Amosa

Joel Amosa has been announced as the 2019 Dame Malvina Major Young Artist with New Zealand Opera, receiving music, language and performance coaching for a mainstage role.

Joel will join an international cast in the role of Fiorello for New Zealand Opera’s Wellington and Christchurch seasons of The Barber of Seville, which opens in Auckland on 6 June for four performances before travelling to Wellington and Christchurch. James Harrison will sing the role of Fiorello for the Auckland season.

Dame Malvina said Joel had made great strides in his singing in recent years, and was generous with his time and talent. “I look forward to seeing him on stage next month. He will be perfect for the role of Fiorello.”

The 2019 Lexus Song Quest winner completed his Music degree and postgraduate diploma under the tutelage of Isabel Cunningham and Frances Wilson at the University of Otago. Since then he has performed a wide range of operatic roles in productions around the country.

The Dame Malvina Major Young Artist programme is by invitation only and is part of a longstanding partnership between the Foundation and New Zealand Opera, underlining the commitment of both organisations to nurture and develop the next generation of opera talent.
