Auckland soprano wins New Zealand Aria

Elizabeth Mandeno has won the 2019 Lockwood New Zealand Aria and $20,000 Dame Malvina Major Foundation first prize.

The New Zealander sang Handel’s Piangero la sorte mia. Second place went to Ayako Ohtake (Australia) singing Delibes’s ‘Bell Song’ Ou va la juene Hindoue? And third place went to Kirsten Jones (Australia) singing Puccini’s Vissi d’arte.

The Lockwood New Zealand Aria competition is one of Australasia’s prestigious singing competitions.

In existence since 1946, it is the largest competition of its kind in New Zealand, attracting aspiring opera stars who pit themselves against some of Australasia’s best young singers.
